Odors detected following contractor work on the building may indicate sewer pipes left open. Although not as common, leaks can also happen when stressed plastic pipes (caused by weight pressure or an excessive bend) finally fracture and break open. Most commonly, plastic drain pipes are chewed through by rats seeking food or water. Sewer odors tend to come and go depending on atmospheric conditions and other factors, and will last indefinitely. Rodents often live in the crawl space, which can provide as much as 40% of the air leakage into the home. This can result in a very significant problem for allergic and sensitive individuals.
Rodents shed tiny pieces of skin and hair called dander, adding to indoor air contamination. When animals have nested in a crawl space or attic, odors are most noticeable when the furnace or air conditioning system is off since still air does not dilute odors and odor will easily enter living areas by natural convection. Live animal urine and feces create gradually increasing odor concentrations in the air. Large, iridescent green or blue flies may be seen inside your home 10 - 14 days after the death of an animal. Odors are usually strongest in one room, and will eventually spread to a larger area. Those odors are caused by gasses emitted by bacteria as they digest the carcass.
Dead animal odors increase rapidly, then diminish slowly over one to two months.
